Ain’t No Lie V1 It was one for the money, and two for the show, It was a long time coming and set to go. In a decent time, it’d have been a shame But, they shot me down, I’d have done the same Murdered with a lie sitting at your desk. Blood gushing out of my head and my chest And they said it was business not personal And that’s just how it is in the modern world Chorus Ain't no lie, ain't no lie By the gun I lived, by the gun I died Ain't no lie, ain't no lie They get their money bye and bye V2 Born into a creed on to the killing floor. It’s like we didn’t see the blood spill anymore. We took our money, and our made a good run, and with god on our side, we fought and won Now the rules of the game are pushed and bent But we learned real young just to forget And they said it was business not personal And that’s just how it is in the modern world Chorus Ain't no lie, ain't no lie By the gun I lived, by the gun I died Ain't no lie, ain't no lie They get their money bye and bye V3 Another folk song, the same as the last. Ain’t no difference from the future and the past. Another folks song, and it ends the same 23 holes in my body and my brain Cause there aint no heroes, marters or saints Just collateral damage to the pawns in the game And they said it was business not personal And that’s just how it is in the modern world Chorus Ain't no lie, ain't no lie By the gun I lived, by the gun I died Ain't no lie, ain't no lie They get their money bye and bye

Sir Isaac Newton V1 He broke my nose with a kick to the head. We were street fighting men and we were once were friends. We fought in the bars and the streets for a trade ...and Sir Isaac Newton was proven right again V2 With fist held high ini the glory of the fight, theyt hit the concrete everye Saturday night.. FallingF to the ground, e, eyes rolled back white...Sir Isaac Newton, again, proven right Chorus Sir Isaac Newton, proven right againA lesson in gravity A lesson in pain, and a little bit of Einstein straight to the face and, Sir Isaac Newton, proven right again V3 The big b men, foolish men came fromc all around.. WithW a bloody bunch of fives tthey’d be sleeping sweet and sound. ‘Cause what goes up, surely smust come down....as Sir Isaac predicted, it was tarmac town Chorus Sir Isaac Newton, proven right again A lesson in gravity A lesson in pain, and a little bit of Einstein straight to the face and, Sir Isaac Newton, proven right again V4 It was many years ago I tried to make my way straight, had I hmy first real go a at the Sunday morning game But he was a hard swinging man wwith no retirement plan, ...proving Isaac Newton with the bruises on his hands Chorus Sir Isaac Newton, proven right again A lesson in gravity A lesson in pain, and a little bit of Einstein straight to the face and, Sir Isaac Newton, proven right again V5 I I heard rumours on the road, that ,the met with foul play,or he’s living down the coast, or he’s in a shallow grave. Other stories do recall, it was a down dirty brawl...andand old sir Isaac Newton’s inevitable law V6 And of my friend, I do not know, if he’s alive or dead, ,but I hope he found a way to grow old in the end.. But for a fighter like that, it is a creed, not a trade ...and I’ve no doubt Sir Isaac Newton was proven right again.

Teenage Lover V1 I’m drifting back the years again, to our prime debut, to my first best friends, to brothers in arms, beers and guitars, a goodnight kiss before her father’s car. But, my life in the hands of the last bus home, to street wise command, our fates tied and owned. The regrets and the answers, and the years, they do fade, but we got something surely that time could never take... Chorus If you’re going down by the Links fairground Where the nights were long, and the music loud. Would you remember me to the girl up the street? Cause I was once her teenage lover. I was once her teenage lover. V2 We went back to school on a Monday morning, they had no idea what had been or was coming. When the weekend came, we were kings again. Drinking up the rider and the local fame. Chain smoking in the cold, and dancing all night. Quite simple really, but the days of our lives. The regrets and the answers, and the years, they do fade, but we got something surely that time could never take... Chorus If you’re going down by the Links fairground Where the nights were long, and the music loud. Would you remember me to the girl up the street? Cause I was once her teenage lover. I was once her teenage lover. V3 No parsley or sage, no rosemary or thyme But Guinness, Marlboro Red and or Lucky Strike With the sting in the tears when the sweat hit the eyes A last dance floor kiss before the ugly lights We were running hard, like it was a race to grow up, and now that we are here, I think, what was the rush... the regrets and the answers, and the years, they do fade, but we got something surely that time could never fake. Chorus If you’re going down by the Links fairground Where the nights were long, and the music loud. Would you remember me to the girl up the street? Cause I was once her teenage lover. I was once her teenage lover.

Red Letter Blues We got no more money for you now. We got no money for you now. It ain’t your concern or your fault, your just a man doing in his job. Still, we got to money for you now. We got to money for you now. Remember they used to try to hide a lie? Remember they used to try to hide a lie? Clear to our red eyes, written in black in white. Still, we got no money for you now. We got no money for you now. Another red letter through the door. Another red letter through the door. Can’t rest the weary eyes. Working morning through the night. And we can't get along this way Can't get along this way. They put one of their cronies in the chair. They put one of their cronies in the chair. They set the table, and we made the bed. With a hand on the bible he did swear. They put one of their cronies in the chair. Remember they used to try to hide a lie. Remember they used to try to hide a lie. Clear to our red eyes. Written in black in white. Still, we got no money for you now. We got no money for you now. We’ve got no money for you now. We’ve got no money for you now. It ain’t your concern or fault, you’re just a man doing his job. Still, we got no money for you now. We got no money for you now.

Ballad Of Brunswick Street V1 I found the freaks like me on Brunswick street, when I was just 22. The Rock’N’Roll bars, Feedback guitars & a fuck you attitude We were new on the scene but we knew where we’d been Come Thursday night, we‘d be sweating for you The bar staff got a show And it was time to go home to infomercials on the tube. Chorus How was it years ago How could it be years ago V2 But in a couple of weeks We’d be back to the street Bangin’ out, some of that, day job blues. It’s been years ago now and the rider ran out And i made sure that I had nothing to lose. but destruction and wine and damn good time with some of the best friends that I ever had. It’s like when bad means good like a bad-ass crew, and a leather jacket on its back Chorus How was it years ago How could it be years ago No, it ain’t years ago How was it years ago V3 I found the freaks like me On Brunswick street When I was just 22 The Rock’N’Roll bars, Feedback guitars And a fuck you attitude Chorus How was it years ago How could it be years ago No, it ain’t years ago How was it years ago

about

Introducing ‘Tape Recordings: Session One’.

I never intended to write these songs. I thought I’d be getting the Low Road back on the actual literal road. But like everyone, I spent the last wee while in shock, quarantined in our little nook in the hills coming to terms with what had the hell just happened.

In the first few weeks especially, like so many others, I sought solace in music and words. Like so many times before, I went back to the raw truth of the Lomax collection. These early recordings and books document a unique time in the evolution of music and the birth of the western world as we know it. Everyone has their truth, but the revelations you find in the old folk songs are truer than most. I then moved through to the folk revivalists of the 60’s who reshaped these folk forms of old to speak their own truth of their time. They say history was written by the winners; folk songs were written by everyday people experiencing their moment in history. This got me thinking about our own time and the stories that need to be told and the folk forms that we can continue to honour.

Just as this folksinger’s muse started to stir, bam, laptop failure. Now it was no gigs and no means to record. Songwriting is how I process the world and there sure is a lot to process at the moment. I just started writing down the words. After a week or two, I was fortunate enough to get a hold of an old Yamaha 4-track tape recorder, so I got to work. The sound of the tape hiss and analogue warmth inspired the old folk sounds in me further, and after listening back to the work, I felt compelled to share the songs in this raw form.

So here it is. I’d love you to have a listen.

I’ve decided to do the “Pay what you want” thing. Please listen for free if you need. It’s a tough time for all and I hope this music can be a bit of respite. We all have something to offer, what I have to offer is tape cassette full of songs.
